Medical Secrets: Suffer No More!

Find success with a Multi-Disciplinary clinic using alternative methods of curing joint and muscle pain!

Musculoskeletal pain can strike athletes at any time for a variety of different reasons. Back pain alone is the second leading cause for doctor visits in the United States, and the leading cause of disability for people under the age of 45. So how is musculoskeletal pain tackled in traditional medicine?

Well, surgery for one. According to data from the National Center for Health Statistics, musculoskeletal system surgeries are the second leading type of surgeries performed in the United States annually. In 1996 they accounted for 7.3 million surgeries. Unfortunately, these surgeries are risky and many are unnecessary and sadly ineffective. This is particularly true for back pain. New studies have confirmed that whether or not a person undergoes back surgery, four years later, the outcome is the same with or without surgery.

The other method for dealing with this pain is through prescription and over the counter drugs. Over 100 million prescriptions for pain relievers are written every year and 15 tons of aspirin consumed each day. However, drugs only mask the problem and, as we all know, come with their own risks of addiction and unpleasant side effects. Anti-inflammatory drugs like Motrin and Naprosyn taken for pain related problems account for one-third of all side effects reported by the Food and Drug Administration.

What better choices do you have to avoid living a life of pain? Research has shown that there are a combination of alternative therapies which, when used in conjunction with each other, are extremely effective in overcoming joint and muscle pain. Multi-discipline facilities that encourage these treatments and provide them all under one roof for your convenience are your best bet.

One such facility that has achieved success with this approach is Joint Rehabilitation & Sports Medical Center, Inc., located in Los, Angeles, California. They have transformed the lives of thousands of patients with varying backgrounds and symptoms. These are people who have tried everything else with no success and have finally achieved a pain-free life from their experience at this facility. Just what is it that they do that is so remarkable?

According to Dr. Marc Darrow, M.D., medical director of the facility, "We provide several different types of treatments, including a very effective but largely unknown procedure called Prolotherapy, a back and neck strengthening machine called MedX, MRA, chiropractic, and much more. Depending on the patient's specific problem, we might use only one therapy or a combination of various therapies that we provide. Often it's the synergy of these treatments that advances quick healing and reduces or eliminates their pain."

Prolotherapy
A very specialized procedure called Prolotherapy is proving to be one of the most effective methods of healing joint and muscle pain. "Prolo" is short for proliferation, because the treatment causes the proliferation (growth, formation) of new ligament tissue in areas where it has become weak. It involves the injection of natural substances, often as basic as dextrose (a sugar solution) and lydocaine (an anesthetic to numb the area and reduce the pain of the actual injection) into the area of pain. The immune response then invokes an inflammatory reaction that brings with it nutrients and cells. The cells form new collagen tissue to repair the injured tissue. As it lays down new collagen, the body creates ligaments and tendons that are stronger and thicker than ever before. People usually require only four to six treatments and studies indicate that close to 90% of patients treated with Prolotherapy show improvement.

Prolotherapy is endorsed by former United States Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, M.D. He was told by a neurosurgeon that the only solution to his intractable back and leg pain was surgery. After receiving Prolotherapy, he was pain free and his surgery was unnecessary.

Dr. Darrow became interested in Prolotherapy after being healed himself with it. A golf injury left his wrist "basically useless because of exquisite pain".  At a medical conference another doctor suggested that he try Prolotherapy. He was skeptical that such a simple procedure could help him, but after only one treatment his wrist was 50% better. With only a few more sessions he was completely pain free and able to return to an active sports life. After that he was hooked and couldn't wait to heal others with this "miracle cure". Dr. Darrow is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine, and teaches Prolotherapy to the medical residents.

MedX
Another highly successful therapy that Joint Rehabilitation & Sports Medical Center, Inc. employs is MedX. Frequently, back and neck injuries occur from structural weakness. Studies by prominent orthopedic surgeons have proven that MedX strengthens the back and neck, alleviates pain, and prevents surgery.

MedX is a computerized back and neck-strengthening machine that tests the exact level of weakness and then provides a built in therapy that brings those areas to optimal strength. Just a three-minute MedX workout twice a week for several weeks has been proven to be so effective that it is covered by insurance and Medicare.

A person using the machine sits upright in a chair while several pads and belts exert pressure on the thighs and hips to prevent them from moving. Then a weight is determined through a static testing procedure and an exercise protocol is designed for each patients needs. The goal is to increase strength levels and active range of motion to get the patient back to full function in their daily activities.

Joint Rehabilitation & Sports Medical Center, Inc. has the top MedX exercise physiologist in the world, Dr. Bill Bergman, PhD. Dr. Bergman studied under the MedX inventor, Arthur Jones, who also invented Nautilus exercise equipment.

Over the past 12 years, he has trained well over 7000 patients. In this group he has seen professional bodybuilders, football players, wrestlers, surfers, volleyball players, golfers, Olympic athletes, track and field participants, marital artists, and the list goes on. They are among the best athletes in the world, but still tested below what is considered a healthy back and neck strength for their ages, weight and gender. These areas just aren't addressed in training programs. With this in mind, just consider how important MedX is for the less active person.

Chiropractic
In keeping with their style of staying on top of all the new breakthroughs in pain relief, the facility also approaches chiropractic medicine in a very unique way. Dr. Jason Kelberman, co-founder of the facility and the Director of Chiropractic, combines chiropractic care with sports medicine, physical therapy, acupressure, exercise rehabilitation, and cranial sacral balancing. His chiropractic work includes applied kinesiology, soft tissue adjustments, and manual and instrumental adjustments. He also utilizes Chiropractic Biophysics, which is the most advanced spinal adjusting system out today. It applies the sciences of mathematics, physics, and biophysics to the practice and theory of chiropractic.

Physical Therapy & Nutrition
Their physical therapy department provides numerous services including ultrasound, electrotherapy, diathermy, phonophoresis, hydroculator packs, orthotics, and microstimulation. Diet is also something that they consider extremely important. They work with each patient individually to educate them on the importance of nutrition and get each of them on a healthy diet regime that suits their lifestyle.

  • Do you want to perform your work or sports at a higher level?

  • Do you have pain from performing repetitive tasks?

WE CAN HELP YOU

A holistic center for education and prevention programs, non surgical treatments and rehabilitation for sufferers of chronic pain, professional and amateur athletes, including weekend warriors and adventurists.

Our multidisciplinary staff works as a team with each patient to develop a personalized program to return the person to his or her normal activities as quickly as possible, to prevent future injuries, and maintain a peak level of fitness.

Dr. Marc Darrow & Dr. Frank KadenPain may result from medical disorders, such as: carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, TMJ, arthritis, neuromuscular degeneration, or spinal stenosis, as well as from automobile accidents and sports related injuries, including those that occurred many years ago.

If you participate in any kind of sport, you are likely to incur injuries that may appear to heal, but 5, 10 or 20 years later may come back as pain of unknown origin. If you work at a repetitive task, you may not notice that you are injuring yourself at first, but over time can lead to severe pain, such as carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive stress injuries.

An evaluation can help pinpoint these areas and a treatment plan will help prevent the injury from becoming a permanent or recurring problem.

Healthcare Philosophy

Our philosophy on healthcare is to assist our patients in their healing process on many levels beyond just the physical.

Although our training teaches us to focus on the physical body as the cause of pain and disease, we have found that many of our physical problems stem from and are modulated by emotional, mental, psychological, and spiritual issues.

Not all people heal on the same schedule or in the same way. We provide a healing model with a loving environment. We don't deal in disease; we deal in healing, which is an active process. Our patients are taught to create the concept and feeling of health. We often have to remove a person's diagnosis that he or she has been branded with by other doctors.

Pain does not mean that a person is broken. X-rays and MRI scans frequently do not tell the truth. A common response from patients is "I can't believe this is a medical office. You are all so understanding and supportive." Many of our patients have been to a multitude of other doctors. We need to be different to make the difference.

Our support staff is the heartbeat of our philosophy. We are ever ready to assist you with scheduling, insurance filing and answering your questions.
